The Orders focus on the cultural and religious roles that they fulfill and the need to defend civil and religious liberties. An insight into the political role of these organisations allows for better understanding of why many people have a genuine problem with that most public manifestation of Orangeism, the parade. We would argue that the history of political involvement by the Orders is based on hard fact not perceptions. Those involved in community relations work speak frequently of perceptions, opinions about others that are based on a false premise.
